If I want to keep up my reputation as a wise-ass grandpa, I need more material. Now, as soon as I get into one of my rants the grandkids groan and finish it for me. I’ve worn out the target cliché things, like television, video games and walking all those miles in the snow to school. I need new ones. Besides, the “walking in the snow” routine flopped badly the first time one of the little monsters logged onto the Internet and decided to check me out.

“You were raised near Monterey, weren’t you Grandpa?”

Wow! Cool, I thought. FEEDBACK!

“Yes I was, you bright munchkin, you. I think you deserve an ice cream for remembering that. There’s a Baskin and Robbins about two miles ahead.”

“Well, my teacher said she lived near there and it never snowed.”

“She must have lived in one of the areas that had really bad fog and couldn’t see the snow. It got so bad we couldn’t see our house. Sometimes I’d wander around trying to find it and wind up sleeping in a chicken co…”

“I looked it up on the Internet and it said it snowed for about a half hour in 1962 and melted about an hour later. That’s the only time it snowed.”

“Yeah, but our house was higher up than most. Elevation means a lot when it comes to snow.”

“You just passed that ice cream place.”

“We’ll catch the next one.”

Like hell I’m going to reward a rug rat for doing that type of research. I have my standards.

But, I need better material. I sat down and tried to figure out some of the unheralded differences between then and now. Next time we get together I’m ready.
